The Royal Navy warship HMS Lancaster has dealt a significant blow to drug traffickers in the Middle East, seizing nearly £33 million worth of illegal narcotics within a span of 24 hours.
This impressive feat follows closely on the heels of HMS Trent’s recent success in the Caribbean, further demonstrating the Royal Navy’s commitment to combating criminal activity on a global scale.
Under the auspices of the Canadian-led Combined Task Force 150, dedicated to curbing illicit activities across vast expanses of ocean, HMS Lancaster intercepted two suspect vessels in the Indian Ocean.
Operating at the very outset of her security patrol following rigorous operational sea training, the frigate’s Wildcat helicopter detected a suspicious vessel during a routine sortie, marking the commencement of an eight-hour operation.
With Royal Marines from 42 Commando securing the vessel, Lancaster’s boarding team conducted a meticulous search, unearthing nearly 100 packages containing heroin, hashish, and crystal meth.
Undeterred by their initial success, the crew swiftly resumed their mission, with the Wildcat helicopter launching another patrol at dusk, leading to the discovery and subsequent seizure of an additional suspicious dhow at dawn.
The combined efforts of aircrew and sailors culminated in the recovery of a staggering 2.4 tonnes of hashish, bringing the total haul over two days to a monumental 3.7 tonnes of illegal drugs. The value of these seizures, as estimated by the National Crime Agency, stands at just under £33 million.
Commander Chris Sharp, the Commanding Officer of HMS Lancaster, lauded the remarkable teamwork and professionalism demonstrated by his crew in executing these complex interceptions. He emphasized the crucial role played by the ship’s company and partners in CTF 150 in ensuring the success of the operation.
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps commended the exceptional achievements of HMS Lancaster’s crew and Royal Marine Commandos, underscoring the vital role of the Royal Navy in policing the world’s oceans and disrupting criminal networks.
