Harry And Meghan’s Criticised Private Naming Ceremony justified?

By Lucy Caulkett-

The Duke and Dutchess of Sussex private naming  ceremony of their child next weekend away from the public and the cameras has come under criticism.  The fact the couple accepted £2.4million from public coffers to renovate Frogmore Cottage, but have declined to make their first son Archie’s naming ceremony has annoyed fans and commentators.

The couple’s already broken several major royal baby traditions has been conspicuous. Their decision not to take part in the post-birth photo call on the hospital steps after Archie’s birth drew criticism at the time .The duke and duchess opted out of the tradition in the same way Princess Diana after the birth of Prince William. They instead  opted for a private photo call at Windsor Castle two days after the birth with just a few selected members of the press.

With all the sustained criticism the couple have faced, their choice of privacy  is understandable. The couple have endured plenty of criticism, extending to unbearable racism that could explain their actions. Prince Harry has always had a tendency to protect his wife, especially after the fate that befell his own mother. He cannot be happy with the treatment he has received from internet trolls, and most recently, the racist tweet sent by Danny baker just days after their new born bay was born.

Disappointment about their decision  for  the royals to have the naming ceremony private is expected, but such fails to consider what the couple have gone through with the press and the public. The ceremony for Meghan and Harry’s  is to take place on July 6, at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, where they married last year.  It is already the subject of criticism by those who say the riyals are trying to live by double standards. The fact Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are public individuals has raised criticisms by those who feel Meghan is denying royal fans a public ceremony whilst benefiting from public money .

It is a fair point that calls for scrutiny, although Meghan could easily point to some of the hostilities she has faced that may explain her position. It still would appear to fly in the face of reason to the public whose tax fund the royals. Penny Junor, royal author and Harry’s biographer,  accused the Duke and Duchess of double standards if the public are shunned from the ceremony.

Ms Junor said the couple “can’t have it both ways” and if they want privacy they should pay for it themselves. She told The Times: “They can’t have it both ways. Either they are totally private, pay for their own house and disappear out of view or play the game the way it is played.

“Seeing Archie and his godparents arriving at the christening is what people are interested in; it isn’t baring your baby’s soul, just giving the public who love and support them a crumb to enjoy”

The ceremony next weekend away from the public and the cameras, despite accepting £2.4million from public coffers to renovate Frogmore Cottage. The Queen is expected to miss Archie’s christening due to other engagements she has.
