Former Olympic Boxing Champion To Launch Veggie Food Bank

By Tim Parsons-

British former boxing champion , Nicola Adams OBE, has joined forces with plant-based food company Strong Roots and food bank platform Bankuet, launch a  vegetarian  food bank campaign to ‘make veg poverty history’.

The food bank’s official  launch begins tomorrow, Friday, in Hackney East London.

Through the partnership, Strong Roots is delivering freezers and frozen vegetarian products to food banks across the UK, and also opening the UK’s first frozen vegetarian food bank in Hackney.

Adams took to social media to share the news, posting ‘I’m really excited to announce my Ambassadorship for Make Veg Poverty History with @strongrootsuk. We launched a Frozen Veggie Food Bank in Hackney today to kick off our mission to get more veg to people who have to rely on food banks’

Nicola  has a passion for the health benefits of fruit and vegetables, which she believes should become a regular addition to everyone’s diet.

Food banks are generally to support the homeless and the needy, but often offer unhealthy food to the hungry, who are hardly in a position to complain about lack of nutrients or the unhealthy components of the food. Most of the homeless are more concerned about having food in their stomach, not the healthy aspect.

The former boxer is introducing a unique element to food banks , which could potentially spread across other food banks in the UK.

Adams from Leeds, West Yorkshire,  became the first female boxer to become an Olympic champion after winning gold at  the London 2012, and the first double Olympic champion following a second gold medal at Rio 2016, both in the flyweight division.

She retired after a brief professional boxing career between 2017 and 2019, and  held the WBO in 2019.
