Footballing legend Paul Gascoigne(pictured) has  signed up for his first UK TV show in over 10 years. The former Newcastle striker will appear on Channel 4’s new show Scared Of The Dark.

The retired and once highly decorated  England footballer is scheduled to take in the upcoming show, titled Scared Of The Dark, which tests the resilience of  celebrities by denying them light for a week while also being tasked with ‘thought-provoking’ challenges. The precise nature of those challenges are unknown.

Across six episodes, the celebrity contestants will undertake a number of tasks and those that fail will have to take on other tasks to save their place on the show. Gazza’s inclusion in the show is expected to be a boost for television ratings, giving his heroic years as a celebrated striker for England.

The programme will keep Gazza- whose battle with alcohol is well documented- engaged over the full period of the show, and is likely to be an effective distraction from any ongoing battle he is facing with alcohol.

The news comes as The Eye Of Media.Com undertook some behind the scenes investigations with some of Gazza’s  handlers about his mental well being, and the need  to ensure he was not being exploited , following some alarm raised a few weeks ago, still under scrutiny.

The 55-year-old last appeared on a UK TV show over a decade ago, in 2009 in The Weakest Link, and has since made a number of appearances at various venues in the Uk, mainly designed to entertain his audience.

The brand new six-part series is said to be a ground-breaking endurance experiment that will see a group of celebrities enter an orchestrated pitch-black reality space for seven days. Extra tasks will accompany those  celebrities who fail their challenges in order to maintain their presence in the show.

At the end of the seven days, only one of the celebrities will emerge into the light as the series winner.

Whether there will be a prize for the winner has not yet been announced.

Head of live events at Channel 4 Tom Beck said: “Funny, frightening and totally unexpected, this idea really jumped out at us – much like we’ll be jumping out and surprising a load of terrified celebrities. The show promises an enticing mix of reality, entertainment and experiment, and I can’t wait to turn the lights off and get started.”
