David Haye’ s Questionnable World Championship Promise

By Gabriel Princewill-

David Haye has promised his fans he will be world champion again.

The recently defeated former Cruiserweight and WBA world champion thanked his fans for their support, following his shock loss to Tony Bellew.

Haye had previously promised to knock out Bellew with just.a jab, insisting that he wasn’t “just being flippant “, and adding that Bellew will be in there ” with no say”.

What transpired was very different, and Haye was decisively beaten by a former Cruiserweight world champion, whose participation in the fight was like standing in front of a bus coming at 30mph.

The Londoner has been rightfully credited for fighting courageously despite a ruptured Achilles he sustained in the sixth round of the entertaining contest.

Notwithstanding, sustaining an injury during a fight he overconfidently boasted would be a walk over for him, avowedly exposed his limitations, both in judgement and preparation. The eventual outcome was humbling for the Londoner, who was graceful in defeat and unreservedly credited his conqueror.

Haye used his Instagram to thank his fans for all their support and ” well wishes “, adding that ” every single one of them has been read and digested by “me”. The usually explosive heavyweight who came in at a careers heaviest of 16 at. 9 inches, said he has the ” best people in the world ” looking after him, and indicated he will be back around the end of the year. He also promised to be world champion again.

Incidentally, Eddie Hearns revealed on Wednesday that Bellew will need to have five months layoff due to a hand injury he sustained in the fight. This makes a rematch between the pair more likely now since they will both be ready to train for a fight again around the same time.

Haye was boxing well before the sixth round but was not clearly dominating Bellew before he sustained the injury, making it an unknown factor what would have happened in the absence of the injury he sustained. Granted, his chances of success would have been higher, but it remains unknown what would have unfolded.

Until Haye fights and beats Bellew, talk if being a world champion again is just that – talk! It will be better for the sport for Haye to avenge the defeats inflicted on him by Tony Bellew, but until he does that, talking about world titles may just be a pie in the sky.
