Coroner Orders Investigation Into Violent Death Of Resident At Nursing Home

By Charlotte Webster-

A full investigation has been ordered by a coroner following the “violent death” of a resident at a Wanstead nursing home.

Mark Kinzley, 61, passed away at Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone after being rushed from Cambridge Nursing Home on Cambridge Park. The East London Coroner’s Court received the case referral from Barts Health NHS Trust on November 1.

Senior east London coroner Graeme Irvine waived a post-mortem examination to honor Mr. Kinzley’s wish to donate his organs. The court heard that Mr. Kinzley was found hanging at the care home, prompting the coroner to describe the incident as a “violent death.”

Medical evidence presented in court revealed that Mr. Kinzley’s cause of death was hypoxic ischemic brain damage, resulting from a lack of oxygen and blood to the brain, which was caused by asphyxia.

During a brief hearing on November 9, Mr. Irvine instructed his coroner’s officer to investigate the circumstances leading to Mr. Kinzley becoming a resident of the nursing home. The coroner ordered the nursing home to provide Mr. Kinzley’s care notes, care plans, and risk assessments for scrutiny.

Additionally, Mr. Irvine requested evidence confirming the reporting of Mr. Kinzley’s death to the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and the local safeguarding team as an incident worthy of investigation.

The inquest has been adjourned to March 26, 2024, allowing for a comprehensive examination of the case. Mr. Kinzley’s death has raised concerns and triggered a multi-agency investigation involving the police, CQC, and social services.

In response to the developments, a spokesperson for the Cambridge Nursing Home stated, “We are currently assisting the police, CQC, and social services with their investigations into the death of our resident. Our thoughts at this difficult time are with his family and our team who cared for him.”

The investigation into the circumstances leading to Mr. Kinzley’s tragic death will shed light on potential lapses in care protocols and could have broader implications for nursing home practices, emphasizing the need for rigorous oversight and scrutiny in the care sector
