Charles James Spencer-Churchill is facing new allegations of controlling or coercive behaviour against his estranged wife, Edla. The updated indictment adds two charges of coercive control occurring over a nine-year period between 2015 and 2024. These new counts supplement three existing charges of intentional strangulation alleged to have occurred between November 2022 and January 2024.

Spencer– a relative of Sir Winston Churchill and Diana, Princess of Wales  allegedly struck her several times in the garden before putting his hands around her neck. He reportedly chased her into a laundry room, hit her with a closed fist, and attempted to strangle her.

The 70-year-old aristocrat has indicated not guilty pleas to the strangulation charges but has not yet formally entered pleas for the new coercive control counts.
Judge Ian Pringle KC granted the duke conditional bail, with a provisional trial date set for 10 January 2028.

An application to dismiss the case is scheduled to be heard on 27 April, with a plea hearing expected on 22 June.
The couple, who married in 2002 and have two children, reportedly separated in 2024.

Edla reportedly fled into a laundry room where her husband allegedly cornered her, struck her with a closed fist, and attempted to strangle her.
In the final specific count, he is alleged to have pushed her onto a bed and grabbed her neck with such force she feared for her safety.
The Duke, a distant relative of both Sir Winston Churchill and Diana, Princess of Wales, spoke only to confirm his identity and acknowledge his understanding of the proceedings. While he previously indicated not guilty pleas to the strangulation charges, he has yet to formally enter a plea for the newly added coercive control counts.
