The BBC dismissed veteran radio presenter Scott Mills after learning that the alleged victim in a historic police investigation into him was under the age of 16, according to reports.
The 53-year-old DJ, a long-standing figure on British radio, was abruptly taken off air last week before being formally sacked on Friday over allegations relating to his “personal conduct”.

Mills’ removal from the airwaves came without warning, with listeners of the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show left surprised by his absence. Within days, the BBC confirmed that his contract had been terminated.
At the time, the corporation provided limited detail, citing only concerns related to “personal conduct.” However, it has since emerged that the decision followed the receipt of “new information” concerning a previous police investigation.
Central to that decision was the revelation that the alleged victim linked to the case was under 16 at the time of the alleged incident—an element that significantly heightened safeguarding concerns and appears to have prompted decisive action by BBC management.

The case relates to an allegation first made in 2016 concerning a historic sexual offence. Scott Mills was subsequently questioned by police, with the investigation focusing on claims involving a teenage boy under the age of 16, reportedly dating back to 2018 inquiries into events said to have occurred decades earlier.
The investigation concluded without charges. A file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which determined that the evidential threshold required to bring a prosecution had not been met.

In a significant development, the BBC has confirmed that it was aware of the police investigation as early as 2017. However, it remains unclear whether senior figures within the organisation at that time knew that the alleged victim was under 16, and if not, why not.
According to reports, current BBC management only recently became aware of this detail. It was this new information—specifically concerning the age of the alleged victim—that led to the decision to terminate Mills’ contract.
A BBC spokesperson said the corporation had “acted decisively” after receiving the updated information, emphasising its duty to uphold safeguarding standards.
Following his dismissal, Scott Mills issued a statement through his lawyer, addressing the allegations and the circumstances surrounding the police investigation.
He said: “The recent announcement that I am no longer contracted to the BBC has led to the publication of rumour and speculation.
“In response to this the Metropolitan Police has made a statement, which I confirm relates to me.
“An allegation was made against me in 2016 of a historic sexual offence which was the subject of a police investigation in which I fully cooperated and responded to in 2018.
“As the police have stated, a file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which determined that the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges.
“Since the investigation related to an allegation that dates back nearly 30 years and the police investigation was closed 7 years ago, I hope that the public and the media will understand and respect my wish not to make any further public comment on this matter.”
His statement confirms both the existence of the investigation and its outcome, while also emphasising that no charges were brought.
The BBC’s decision to act appears to have been driven primarily by safeguarding considerations, particularly given the alleged victim’s age.
In recent years, the corporation has faced intense scrutiny over its handling of past misconduct cases, leading to a strengthening of internal policies designed to protect minors and vulnerable individuals.
Under current guidelines, any information suggesting potential harm to a minor—even in historical cases—can trigger serious internal review and disciplinary action.
Media analysts suggest that the BBC’s swift response reflects a zero-tolerance approach aimed at avoiding the reputational damage associated with previous scandals.
Despite the decisive action, the case has raised difficult questions about what the BBC knew and when. If the organisation was aware of the police investigation in 2017, critics argue, why was action not taken sooner? And did earlier management fail to fully assess the implications of the allegations?
