BBC none executive board member resigns over Trump row

A non-executive directors on the BBC board,  Shumeet Banerji, who was responsible for upholding and protecting the independence of the corporation by acting in the public interest has resigned over the broadcaster’s fiasco involving US president Donald Trump.

Shumeet Banerji who  was also responsible for ensuring the board’s decision-making was in the public interest. announced he  was not consulted over the resignation of the BBC Director, Tim Davies or the CEO of news, Deborah Turner. He said he would be leaving on Friday, less than two weeks after the aformentioned pair resigned from their roles.

The BBC was hit by an embarrassing breach of the press  regulator’s standard involving accuracy when it doctored footage about Donald Trump relating to the insurrection of the 2020 U.S elections.

Benerji had been in the role since 2022 and is believed to have been on a £33 a year salary.

A BBC spokesman said: “Shumeet Banerji today notified the BBC board of his resignation.

“Mr Banerji’s term on the board as a non-executive director was due to end at the end of December and we thank him for his service.

Banerji had said in a letter that he was “not consulted” about the events which led up to the resignations of Davie and Turness, BBC News reported.

Banerji is the founder of advisory and investment firm Condorcet, LP.

He stepped down as the chief executive of management consultancy firm Booz & Company in 2012, and he also sits on the board of directors for several companies.
