Tory MP Andrew Bridgen has been suspended for spreading misinformation about the Covid vaccination.
The North West Leicestershire MP was suspended for posting a tweet which compared vaccination to the Holocaust.
Tory chief whip Simon Hart said the comments had “crossed a line” and caused great offence.
He said Mr Bridgen would lose the party whip – meaning he will sit as an independent – while a formal investigation takes place.
Another tory Mp Sir Desmond Swayne in November 2020, told UK protesters against lockdown that NHS covid figures were being “manipulated” to exaggerate the scale of the pandemic, and insisted his claim was legitimate when asked to apologise.
Michael Gove at the time indicated that action would be taken against Mr Swayne, but no action was taken, leading to the view that the government at the time had no solid grounds to tackle him.
