By James Simons- Anti terrorist police have arrested a man in Southend airport on suspicion of preparing terrorist attacks.The 49 year old from Southend was arrested under section 7 of the Terrorist Act 2000, and was subsequently arrested under section 5 of the terrorism Act 2006.
Under the Act, an individual or group is commiting an offence if they undertake plans or training in preparation of commiting terrorism. It includes plans to prepare an act in preparation of terrorism, or assisting another to commit such offence. The arrest suggests that police have evidence the individual was planning the preparation of an act of terrorism.
Terror cops are believed to have been tipped off about the man , and had been conducting some surveillance on him for a while. Although police have not given any details of the grounds for their arrest, it can easily be deduced that the man is believed to have been travelling to implement preparatory plans for acts of terrorism.
Section 5 is closey linked with Section 6 which specifies the use of threat to influence the government or an international governmental organisation, or to intimidate the public or sections of the public, or for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, or ideological cause. It also includes serious damage to a person, creates a serious risk to the health or safety of the public, or a section of the public.
All terrorist related acts have as their ultimate goal, the aim of influencing the government or intimidating the public orsections of the public.
